14 Day Writing Challenge
Day #9: Love Story
Mary sat at her wobbly desk towards the back of the classroom. Sitting in front of her, was… Him. Her close friend. Her secret crush. The one who had a crush on her best friend… Like a cliche love story, she would never be with him. After all, he had a crush on her best friend, Minah. But Minah, of course, didn’t return his feelings. But… That didn’t stop him from trying his best to, as he put it, “woo” her.
A sigh escaped her slightly chapped lips. Mary shook herself out of her daydream, and decided to focus on her work. She was in her Honors English class, working on an extremely important assignment. “Wait… What was the prompt about again?” Mary wondered to herself, frustrated that she had ALREADY forgot what she was supposed to be writing about. She looked up at the whiteboard in the front of the classroom. She read the words neatly written in the middle of the large board. It read:
“Write about unrequited love. Unrequited love is when two beings, or one being, is in love with another. However, they can NEVER be together. Why? Well, their family/friends might not approve. Maybe it’s a one-sided love. You can write in the form of: a letter, a poem, a short story, ANYTHING that you want to do write in the form of!”
Once she had re-read the writing prompt, Mary pushed her eyeglasses up and swept her hair out of her face, getting ready to write. “Hmmm… What should I write about?” Mary thought to herself. She turned around in her chair and glanced over to her best friend, Minah, sitting halfway over the classroom. Minah was already writing her story, deeply in focus. Mary smiled softly and turned her focus back on the couple of sheets of lined paper placed in front of her. “I’m going to write… How about a letter? I could write a letter about… My feelings for him! That would be cool!” Mary decided in her head. She IMMEDIATELY started writing her letter.
After a while, Mary finished her letter. She smiled proudly at her finished work. Mary stood up and placed her letter in the turn-in box. Afterwards, she quickly returned to her desk, and decided to work on her homework for tomorrow.
It was lunch period. Mary was sitting at her usual lunch table with a bunch of her friends. Suddenly, HE came along. He was holding a sheet of paper. “Um, hey, Mary?” He greeted her, an awkward expression on his face. “Um, yeah?” She replied, wondering what this was about. “Er…” He held up the piece of paper. It was in her handwriting… It was her letter for English class! She gasped. “Oh no…” She thought to herself.
“Ummm… I’m sorry, but… I don’t feel the same way…” He responded.
